July 8 2018 The California City Whiptails defeated the Monterey Amberjacks 6-4 after building an early lead and holding off a late Monterey rally. California City totaled nine hits and two errors while Monterey collected 10 hits and committed one error.
The Whiptails scored once in the first inning and twice in the second before adding single runs in the fourth fifth and seventh. Carson Lee went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, while Wardy Polanco had two hits including a triple and scored twice. Scott Stetson and Eli Roundtree each hit a home run, with Stetson driving in one run and Roundtree producing two RBI.
Monterey broke through with one run in the seventh and scored three more in the eighth to cut the deficit to 6-4. Chuck Rocker led the Amberjacks by going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored. Brian Luebcke and James Prockish each added two hits, while Thomas Prospero contributed an RBI.
Rich Edwards earned the win for California City after allowing 10 hits and four runs, three earned, in 7.1 innings. He walked one and struck out two. J. Kortessis worked 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. Jordan Gray took the loss for Monterey, surrendering six runs on nine hits in seven innings while striking out six and walking four.
