Monterey Amberjacks Rally Past Martinez Sturgeon 13-12

July 28 2023 The Monterey Amberjacks rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Martinez Sturgeon 13-12. Monterey finished with 16 hits and overcame a five-run deficit after Martinez built a 12-7 lead through seven innings. Martinez collected 14 hits and committed no errors while Monterey was charged with three errors.

Martinez scored four times in the first inning, added three runs in the third and put together a five-run seventh. Dave Kyriacou hit a home run and drove in three runs, while Tony Riley homered twice and also finished with three RBI. Eric Whitfield went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Jon Fargnoli added a home run and two RBI.

Monterey scored twice in the third, once in the fifth, three times in the sixth and once in the seventh before its decisive ninth-inning rally. Hiroki Goke had one hit and three RBI, Jake Grubesic went 3-for-5 with three RBI, and Rodney Scarver collected four hits and scored twice. Robert Malone added three hits and three runs.

Alec Abend earned the win after allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning. Nick Samudio threw 3.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts, while Joseph Barrons worked 2.2 innings and allowed eight hits and seven runs, four earned. Martinez starter Brady Bibbs struck out six in 5.1 innings but allowed nine hits and six runs, and Nic Fay took the loss after surrendering seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings.
