Santa Cruz Seaweed Hold Off Monterey Amberjacks 6-5

June 25 2022 The Santa Cruz Seaweed held off the Monterey Amberjacks 6-5 at Harvey West Park. Santa Cruz scored in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead, then added one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.

Monterey rallied with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh, but the Amberjacks came up one run short. Christian Coipel collected two hits and two RBI, while Caleb Rosario added two RBI. Cody Stevenson scored twice and doubled for Monterey, which finished with seven hits.

Nick Giambalvo powered Santa Cruz with a home run, one hit, two RBI and one run scored. Erik Mitchell went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Ron Jackson added a hit and an RBI. The Seaweed totaled five hits and turned one double play.

Nick Samudio earned the win after recording the final out, striking out one in a scoreless inning. Greg Salazar worked 6.2 innings for Santa Cruz, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out six. Monterey starter Jordan Warecke struck out 12 over six innings, allowing five hits and five runs, two earned, while Omar Tapia was charged with the loss.
